At the centre of its programme is the Lagos Climate Investment Day on 13 November, bringing investors, development finance institutions, businesses and strategic partners together at the Nigerian Pavilion.
The programme is being coordinated by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, headed by Titilayo Oshodi MCIPM, FISMN, Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy.
For Lagos, this goes well beyond climate policy. As Nigeriaโs commercial centre and one of Africaโs most important urban economies, Lagos faces intense pressure on transportation, energy, waste management, water and infrastructure. Climate change, particularly flooding and other environmental stresses, adds to that challenge. But these pressures also create an investment opportunity. The opportunities stretch across renewable energy and cooking, sustainable transport, water and climate resilience, circular economy and industrial decarbonisation, climate-smart infrastructure, food systems and green enterprise.
There is also a wider African significance too. Lagos is testing whether a major African city can organise its climate priorities into a pipeline capable of attracting substantial institutional and private capital.
Mrs. Oshodi says the ambition is to use climate action to strengthen infrastructure, expand clean energy, improve transportation, attract capital and create jobs.
COP31 gives Lagos an international stage. The bigger opportunity is what can follow: turning climate pressure into infrastructure, enterprise, jobs and a greener, more resilient urban economy.
